Eating Healthy On The Go!

The Reason this Blog Exists!

Since becoming a Chiropractor I have been asked many questions about various aspects of a person’s health from my family, friends, and patients. The purpose of this blog is to answer these questions in a format that they can share with their friends and family. The reason I got into the health field was to help as many people as possible and this blog is just another way I can do that in my community.

Eating Healthy on the Go!

We all know that what we eat is an important aspect of keeping our families healthy, but between dance lessons, baseball, school, work, etc it is hard to find the time. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 48 percent of the money spent on food in this country are meals eaten away from the home. This months blog is all about finding ways to keep you on the go, fueled with the right nutrients, and save you money while doing it!

Planning Ahead

Planning ahead is one of the key to making sure you and your family is getting the proper nutrients for your busy schedules. I know planning ahead sounds like one more thing to add to your already hectic schedule, but in most cases in the time you can sit in line at a so called "fast food" joint you could have prepared snacks at home and saved money! I will list a few easy snacks prepare below. To help keep your snacks fresh all day keep a small cooler in the car and ice packs ready in the fridge. Another option is to take all the money your saving and get a cooler that plugs into your car's power receptical. Many places carry them, here is a link to get you started! Okay so back to planning ahead! When it comes to what to drink on the go water is the best option for everyone no calories and when you spill it it won't stain mom and dad's clean seats! Below is a list of some easy food to prepare some will be obvious, but some may be new to you. Variety is the best way to keep you and your family eating healthy and being happy!
  • granola bars
  • carrot sticks
  • nuts
  • yogurt
  • trail mix
  • cereal
  • ants on a log (perfect veggie, fruit, & protein combo)
  • sandwiches (or sandwich wraps)
  • fresh fruit
  • frozen edmame
This list can go on and on, but remember the best thing is variety.  A few things I stumbled across that I thought were simple and sounded delicious are below! Hope you enjoy!

Apple Sammies with Peanut Butter and Yogurt Spread - Cut apple in sandwich type slices. Spread apples with a layer of peanut butter & yogurt (or favorite nut butter) onto the cut apples. Add a few raisins and put the halves together and pack in resalable plastic bags.

Frozen Banana Bonbons - Cut banana into 1-inch rounds, dip in a favorite flavor of yogurt, and roll in crushed graham crackers. Place the slices in an airtight container and store it in the freezer until you're ready to travel. These bonbons are best served on car trips because they defrost pretty quickly. Also try this with your favorite nut butter between two slices of banana before dipping into the yogurt!

Cookie dough balls - I have provided the link below because this recipe is a little more involved then the others. Here is the recipe: Blend cashews, vanilla, maple syrup, and almond milk/water until smooth and creamy. Scoop cashew cream into medium bowl and add almond meal and protein powder (if using). Stir to combine. Fold in cacao nibs (if using). Dough should be thick and tacky. Scoop mixture onto parchment lined cookie sheet with a cookie scoop or melon baller and freeze until firm. Store in an airtight container in the freezer and enjoy!
